A Person that

they would likely lose their humanity and eventually lose their material

Traditions
deserve to be respected only insofar as they are respectable – that is,
exactly insofar as they themselves respect the fundamental rights of men and

Sometimes
old customs need to be replaced, especially if they hurt a person and their

When
you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these

1. On the lines below, write a definition of Ethnocentrism. Find one on the web.
Ethnocentrism is the tendency to look at the world primarily
from the perspective of one's own culture. Ethnocentrism often involves the
belief that one's own race or ethnic group is the most important and that some
or all aspects of its culture are greater than those of other groups. Within
this ideology, individuals will judge other groups in relation to their own
particular ethnic group or culture, especially with concern to language,
behavior, customs, and religion. These ethnic differences and sub-divisions
serve to define each ethnicity's unique cultural identity.
2.
Read the cartoon. How is Ethnocentrism reflected
in the conversation below?
Write your answer on the lines below.
|
I can clearly see that Bucky is being ethnocentric and it
makes him false assumptions about cultural differences.
3. Looking at the cartoon characters.
Imagine
them in social situations. What kind of people would (would n’t) they associate
with? What kind of events (movies, shows) would (would n’t) they prefer to go? Think
of other situations.
Describe Bucky
1-
Bucky; In any
social situations I think that Bucky would be friends with other people with
the same views as him, he is very closed-minded and intolerant of other people
cultures. He definitely would not associate with anybody outside of his
cultural background. He is the definition of ethnocentrism. Bucky would
probably prefer to go to any movies or shows that promotes his own culture and
ways and would have no time for any other sort.
Describe the man talking with Bucky. Let’s call him Tom
2-
Tom; I believe
that Tom is the complete opposite of the definition of ethnocentrism. He seems
very open-minded and keen to learn about other cultures outside of his own. To
me, I would like to think that Tom would be very welcoming to people of all
cultures and he would be very interested to understand. I would think that he
would enjoy very culturally diverse shows and movies.
4. Drawing Ethnocentrism.
On a
separate sheet of paper, make a drawing of Ethnocentrism. You don’t have to
draw well.

My Opinions - 'Mind Your Langauge' & 'Where is the Love?'
Mind Your Language
My opinion on the show 'Mind Your Language', is that all the characters in the show seem to be a stereotype of the cultural background that they are from; for example, the French woman is romantic and flirty, and the German woman is tough and abrupt.
'Where is the Love?'- Black Eyed Peas
My opinion on the song 'Where is the Love?' by the Black Eyed Peas, is that the lyrics are against discrimination, stereotyping and racism. They suggest in the song lyrics that all the people in the world need to have love for one another and they need to come together as one.

Reflective
Essay 2
In my essay
I will define each of the terms (stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination) plus
I will give an example and say how my learning will help me in my society.
First prejudice
is an opinion that you have about something without knowing anything about it for example He was prejudiced to give her the
job only on her looks. Great you think she got the job! but what about her
qualifications?
Second
discrimination is when you treat someone bad and don’t like them just because
of their race, gender etc. For example I hate you because of your skin color.
Next stereotyping
is when you judge a group of
people who are different from you the same as “all Americans are fat “and “all Arabs are terrorists”
What I learn from my studies is not to just
have one opinion about all people, I learn to treat people as individuals
regardless of their background, skin color’s or gender
In conclusion
I think those three terms are the reason of racism and when people stereotyping,
when people prejudice and when people discrimination it always Couse problems between
people. People should think positive about other races and look at the good
side of it.
