Reflective Essay 2

In my essay I will define each of the terms (stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination) plus I will give an example and say how my learning will help me in my society.

First prejudice is an opinion that you have about something without knowing anything about it  for example He was prejudiced to give her the job only on her looks. Great you think she got the job! but what about her qualifications?

Second discrimination is when you treat someone bad and don’t like them just because of their race, gender etc. For example I hate you because of your skin color.

Next stereotyping is when you judge a group of people who are different from you the same as “all Americans are fat “and “all Arabs are terrorists”

What I learn from my studies is not to just have one opinion about all people, I learn to treat people as individuals regardless of their background, skin color’s or gender

In conclusion I think those three terms are the reason of racism and when people stereotyping, when people prejudice and when people discrimination it always Couse problems between people. People should think positive about other races and look at the good side of it.

1.      Which types of Cultural Diversity exist at ADMC? Give an example from each of the ten categories in your table of ten. Say whether each one is a Challenge or a Benefit.

There are many types of cultural diversity in ADMC such as English, Indian, American, Arab and Philippines.

A long time ago in the USA all immigrants from other societies would learn to be American and forget their own culture, which was the melting pot where different societies are mixed and become the same. Nowadays they learn to be American and keep their own culture and that is the garden salad where different societies come together in coordination

Advantages and Disadvantages of Cultural Diversity

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Cultural Diversity.

In this essay I will explain the advantages and disadvantages of cultural diversity in Abu Dhabi, which I witness on a daily basis, and I will give my opinions and recommendations towards the end of my essay.
Cultural diversity is defined as cultural differences that exist in the world, a society, or an institution. The phrase cultural diversity is sometimes misused to mean the variety of human societies or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole.
There are many challenges that can be negative aspects or disadvantages, for example racism, habits, losing identity, losing tradition and language barriers. My personal experience was that I met one person who could not speak either Arabic or English, only their own language, which is a disadvantage in such a multi-cultural environment.
In the other hand we have many benefits and advantages such as a lot of different food selection from many cultures, plus different life styles, different ways of thinking and solution to problems. I think there are so many things we can learn from other cultures, such as understanding and respect.
In conclusion I believe that cultural diversity has more advantages than disadvantages, if you look at the beneficial side of it, we get to learn from and learn about other cultures, which is always very interesting.

Culture and Personality in Anthropology

Read the section about Culture and Personality in Anthropology. Answer these questions about that section:-

1.       Define “Anthropology” in your own words                                                                                            The scientific study of the origin, the behavior, and the physical, social, and cultural development of humans

2.       Define “movement” in this context

3.       What do you understand by “socialization of children” Give an example

Is teaching them about their mother country

4.       Read this sentence again and give examples of childrearing in different societies and cultures: “socialization creates personality patterns. It helps shape peoples emotions, thoughts, behaviors, cultural values and norms to fit into and function as productive members in the surrounding human society. The study of culture and personality demonstrates that different socialization practices such as childrearing in different societies (cultures) result in different personality types.”

An example of childrearing in different societies would be; in my society we are encouraged not to interact with women and to be segregated, whereas in western society it is different and men and women mix everyday.

5.       Read this sentence again and say to what extent you agree: “all humans are the same when born, but childrearing in different societies causes deviations in behavior and personalities from each other.”

I agree fully with this statement as I truly believe that we are all born the same and that it is the way we are brought up that shapes us as a person.  We are brought up with values and respect, but if we did not have these guidelines then we would be completely different people today.

6.       Reflect on the reading above. Can you see a link between your culture and your personality? Think about that in relation to your own culture first, and then think about personality and culture in a different society. Reflect. Give examples.

In my culture we are taught mainly about respect and tolerance. We are brought up with strong values and guidelines in relation to religion. As religion is a huge part of my culture and beliefs, I cherish my values and therefore I am the person I have become today.
